About Gandikota – The Grand Canyon of India

Gandikota derives its name from the Telugu words ‘Gandi’ (gorge) and ‘Kota’ (fort). It is best known for its awe-inspiring gorge formed by the Penna River, cutting through the Erramala Hills. The fort, dating back to the 12th century, was once a stronghold of the Pemmasani Nayaks.

Inside the fort lies a symphony of ruined temples, a masjid, watch towers, and granaries – narrating tales of medieval glory. The Madhavaraya Temple, a Dravidian-style wonder, and the Ranganatha Swamy Temple with intricate carvings showcase architectural brilliance.

No Gandikota trip is complete without standing at the edge of the canyon and absorbing its surreal beauty during sunrise and sunset.

The Underground Marvel: Belum Caves

Belum Caves are one of the largest cave systems in India, stretching over 3,229 meters. Formed millions of years ago, these caves feature:

  • Long corridors and underground streams.

  • Stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations.

  • The Patalganga – the cave’s deepest point at 46 meters below ground.

  • Meditation zones once used by Buddhist and Jain monks.

A trip to Gandikota is made richer with the exploration of Belum Caves, making this journey a blend of above-ground vistas and underground marvels.
