Tripura Backpacking
Where Culture meets Nature

Tripura is the third smallest state in the country and part of the seven sisters in North-East India. It is one of the most literate states in India with a literacy rate of 87%. The sculptures at the sites of Unakoti, Pilak etc. depicts artistic fusion of organised and tribal religions. Forests cover 55% per cent land area. There are nearly 300 species of birds, 90 land mammal species in the evergreen and deciduous forests.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh to the north, south and west. In the east, it meets Assam and Mizoram. Agartala is the capital city of Tripura, located on the banks of the Haora River. ‘Agar’ is a valuable perfume and incense tree, and the suffix ‘tala’ means underneath. It refers to the abundance of agarwood trees in the region.
