Some trekkers rate Kalavantin as the most thrilling trek of Maharashtra. The trek can be done by beginners but the thrilling rock cut steps will definitely test your mettle.

Kalavantin and Prabalgad are part of the same mountain and located between Matheran and Panvel. The trek to Prabalmachi, which is a village on halfway is simple and can be done at night. After Prabalmachi, the route splits to Prabalgad and Kalavantin. Kalavantin appears like a cone from top view and seems impregnable. However, there are large steps made by cutting the rocks. The last 15 feets before summit requires rock climbing. You can see Chanderi, Mhasmalgad, Peb fort and the Matheran range from the summit.

Devkund waterfall is located inside the forest near a village called ‘Bhira’, near Bhira Dam. It is said to be the origin of Kundalika river (famous for river rafting at Kolad). It takes 2 hours trek to reach the waterfall from the base village. The landscape of this 200 feet waterfall is amazing. It is surrounded by steep walls on three sides which makes it impossible to climb to the top from the base of waterfall. There is a deep pool formed at the base which becomes dangerous in peak monsoon. The stream flowing from this pool is also very pleasant. The trail to reach the waterfall is located in dense forest.

In recent years, the tranquility of the forest is lost due to irresponsible trekkers who carry loud speakers and spoil the peaceful ambience during weekends.

Birthday Celebration at Kohoj:

Kohoj has retained its wilderness as it never appeared in the top choices of organizers. However, the 4 hours hike to Kohoj has all ingredients for a pleasant trek – small lakes, hills, plateaus, misty atmosphere, flora and fauna, remote hamlets. The two very peculiarly shaped pinnacles at top were the guiding lighthouse. The view from the top is mind blowing. You can see Dheraj River, Bandre dam and Tak-Mak.

Kohoj is also one of the best place to see sunrise.

A little below the pinnacle, there are water tanks which has potable drinking water through out the year. You can cook your own food in the plateau below the pinnacle during winters. In monsoon you might get to see reverse waterfalls here.
